Urban soils suffer contamination, abuse and neglect that affects public health and the health of local plants and animals. We will learn criteria for assessing a site for possible contamination from heavy metals and chemical pollutants and discuss how to create a combined strategy of phytoremediation (plants), microremediation (bacteria), and mycoremediation (fungi) to implement on your site to help heal your soils. Please bring clear printed images of the site you want to address to class – these images should show spontaneous vegetation of the site as well as any cultivated plants.
